DePuy Hip Replacement Recall

Hip Replacement Failure Attorneys

Hip Replacement Recall Lawyers
Johnson & Johnson's artificial hip replacement company DePuy Orthopedics, Inc. has issued a recall of two hip replacement products because of higher failure rates that necessitated second surgeries.

DePuy recalled the ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System and the ASR™ XL Acetabular System after data showed that within five years, one in eight patients needed a "revision surgery," which is required when an artificial joint doesn't properly fit. Serious pain and difficulty walking can result from a faulty hip replacement.

The hip implant recall affects an estimated 93,000 replacement systems and more than 29 different models of hip replacement implants.

What Hip Replacement Products Have Been Recalled?

DePuy has recalled the following hip replacement products:

  • ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System
  • ASR™ XL Acetabular System

According to the Associated Press, the ASR™ XL has been on the market since 2004 and was sold worldwide. The ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System has been on the market since 2003 and was exclusively available outside the U.S.

DePuy has now settled all revision ASR cases. If you have a DePuy ASR and have had a revision surgery, call us to see if you can be included in this settlement.

How Can I Tell if I Have a Recalled Hip Device?
Symptoms of a defective ASR™ XL Acetabular System or DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System include pain and difficulty walking.

DePuy suggests contacting your orthopedic surgeon to determine if your hip implant has been recalled. If you do not know who performed your hip replacement surgery, ask your primary care physician or someone at the hospital where the surgery took place.

What Parts Have Been Recalled?
All components for the ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing Platform from DePuy Orthopedics, Inc. are part of this recall.

How Does the Hip Work?
The hip joint is like a ball that fits in a socket. The socket portion of the hip is called the acetabulum. The femoral head at the top of the thighbone (femur) rotates within the curved surface of the acetabulum.

With an ASR Hip, a one-piece acetabular cup, which is a metal liner, replaces the acetabulum. With an ASR XL total hip replacement, there are three components: the femoral stem is inserted inside the femur; the femoral head (or ball) connects to the stem and then fits inside the acetabulum. Once the three components are aligned, more natural movement may be restored.

With the DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System, there are two components: a cap is placed over the natural femoral head and the acetabulum is replaced with the one-piece cup.
