Yaz (Yasmine) was marketed by Bayer and approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006. It was the first FDA approved oral contraceptive that was also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Heavy advertising for Yaz by Bayer caused use of the birth control pill to skyrocket in a short timeframe - many of whom were not aware of serious potential side effects, such as life-threatening blood clots, heart attack or stroke.
Misleading advertising in 2008 caused the FDA to send two warning letters to Bayer, requiring the drug company to correct the false and misleading advertising. Although advertising implied Yaz was used for treatment of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Yaz is not approved for use of PMS. More importantly, the FDA warned Bayer for deceptive advertising that downplaying serious side effects of Yaz.
