Pfizer Sued Over Claims that Lipitor Causes Diabetes

The attorneys at Bohrer Brady, LLC are pursuing claims on behalf of women against Pfizer, the manufacturer of the popular cholesterol-lowering statin drug Lipitor (Atorvastatin). The suits allege that Lipitor either caused or contributed to the women developing Type 2 diabetes. Several recent studies have linked Lipitor and other cholesterol lowering statin drugs to an increased risk of diabetes, particularly in middle-aged and elderly women. For example, a study published in 2013 by the BMJ noted a significant increased risk of a new onset of diabetes in patients 66 years or older. The Journal of The American College of Cardiology (JACC) also published an article in 2011 analyzing three large randomized clinical trials. The study found that patients may be at an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes especially in patients with other diabetes risk factors.

As a result of the growing concern of a link between cholesterol-lowering statin drugs and Type 2 diabetes, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a statement on Lipitor and other statin drugs in February 2012. The agency warned that patients using cholesterol-lowering statin drugs may have an increased risk of developing high blood sugar levels and Type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a life-long, life-altering disease. The patient’s body is unable to produce enough insulin to regulate glucose (sugar) levels in the blood. When this occurs, the body’s cells cannot function properly, causing serious health problems including: damage to nerves and small blood vessels in the eyes, kidneys, and heart; hardening of the arteries which can cause heart attack and stroke; dehydration; and diabetic coma. The lawsuits involving Lipitor seek to recover damages for these serious, and sometimes life-threatening, health conditions.

The lawsuits allege that: Pfizer knew or should have known that Lipitor causes Type 2 diabetes and may increase blood glucose levels but failed to warn users of the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes; despite Pfizer’s knowledge of the risks, the company continued to market the drug as safe and effective; Pfizer failed to properly test their product; and Pfizer deceived Lipitor users and the general public regarding the potential side effects of the product.
